Water on the moon - lots of it!
November 13, 2009 is a very important date for NASA. On that day, NASA reported something that everyone was wondering; is there water on the moon? LCROSS, which stands for Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite, was able to gather this important data. NASA literally shot a lunar crater at the moon's south pole to see if there's any source of water.
And what do you know, LCROSS was a success! NASA found lots of water on the moon that's been there for a very long time! If we can capture all of this "water", we might be able to find some more cool discoveries about this "water" on the moon.
You might be wondering why "water" is in quotes. This is because the "water" on the moon is (please get me if I'm wrong, I'm no where near an astronomer/scientist) not the water we're used to, H20. It may not have one part oxygen (O) and two parts hydrogen (H2). I wonder what will happen if NASA is able to bring some of this "water" to Earth!
Michael Wargo, who's the chief lunar scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said,
We're unlocking the mysteries of our nearest neighbor and by extension the solar system. It turns out the moon harbors many secrets, and LCROSS has added a new layer to our understanding.
And you know what, we really are discovering new things about out solar system. This frozen "water" (ice) will spark a lot of new information about the closest planet to us, the moon.
